Vessels and Sculptures by Jane Burton

Tyler Burton
SCULPTURE STATEMENT

I am drawn to the figure, in it's abstract form…representing all of humanity. I am interested in the mood and personality of each sculpture, represented by the drop of a shoulder or the tilt of a hip. I have always been fascinated by the fact that no two humans look alike, even the figure in its simplest form, featureless.

I do not form an idea before I start working, but rather let the form emerge. As I create my sculpture, a life appears, a personality appears…what does it want to say? What does it have to offer?

I choose to Raku my work as the process is both exhilarating and unpredictable. When a piece emerges from the smoke, it is like a birth.

Are all of its toes and fingers there? What color, what emotion, is it bringing into this world?

PHOTO STATEMENT

I have always been drawn to water, it's power, it's renewing energy, and to the human, in it's abstract form…representing all of humanity.

This series is about the timeless and life giving element of water, and the transitory nature of our lives.

In my photographs, I strive to reveal something about life that is universal... to provoke wonderment and questions, to create a sense of mystery, tension and peace.

I like to work in the quiet of the night when spaces that are hectic during the day become tranquil and uninhabited.
