ARTIST STATEMENT
I like to work figuratively but I have never tried to make a piece thinking I know what it will look like when I am finished. My work often ends up with the qualities of an inner peacefulness, or wisdom, and sometimes a sadness. The clay brings me peace, and teaches me about inner stillness. I think that often translates into the finished product.
Much of the work is Raku fired. The Raku process reminds me, again, that ultimately we are not in control. It is always a small miracle when a glowing hot piece emerges from the kiln, is engulfed in flames and smoke, and not only survives, but is more vibrant and beautiful than before. It reminds me that going through hard times, it is possible to emerge stronger and more gracious than before.
In my photography work, I am also interested in themes of survival and transformation. The series Transition and Night Swim are about the timeless and life giving element of water, and the transitory nature of our lives.
